Freefall Parachute Jump
Rob Rutherford, who works on the Outbound programme of the Nissan Mobility Centre, has been involved on a personal level, with disabled people and the Motability scheme for a long time. When the position at the Nissan Mobility Centre became available in February he jumped at the opportunity.
On joining the team he contacted the Motability Fundraising team for ideas on raising money for the charity. One of the most exciting suggestions they had was a freefall parachute jump from 12,000 feet!
On the 28th July 2004 at the North London Parachute Centre that is exactly what Rob, along with his colleague on the Mobility team, Sue Barnes decided to do !
Imagine standing at the edge of an open doorway in an aircraft flying at 12,000 feet - the noise of the engines and the wind ringing in your ears with only the outline of distant fields below. Now imagine leaning forward out of that doorway and letting go - falling forward into the clouds, diving down through the air as you start to freefall at over 120mph! Then imagine the peace and quiet as the canopy opens, the steering toggles come down either side of you and you begin a tranquil parachute descent from a mile up in the air, steering yourself back down to the centre of the drop zone.
Rob Rutherford and colleague Sue Barnes both jumped and in total they raised £441.00 for Motability.
Well done to both of them!
